The Importance of Social Security For Coconut Sugar Farmers

The coconut sugar farmer is high-risk profession. They have to climb coconut trees every day to extract nectar/sap,the raw material for coconut sugar.

They have to climb the trees twice in a day, in the morning and evening. The average height of fruiting coconut trees in Banyumas Regency ranges from 5 to 12 meters.

Climbing these trees makes many farmers worry for their safety.

They must accept the risk of falling from the coconut tree when tapping the coconut nectar.

Furthermore, there are risks of injury, permanent disability, and even death which is always a concern for coconut sugar farmers.

SUCIPTO’s story

Sucipto is one of them. Now at the age of 45 years, he is still actively tapping around 49 coconut trees every day. He has been doing this for 25 years.

Sucipto loves his profession as a coconut sugar farmer because this has been passed down by generation to generation from his grandfather and his father.

Over the time, as he grew up, he felt that he was no longer as agile as before. Therefore, every time he prepares to climb to exploit the coconut trees is always a concern. “If something happens to me, what will happen to my wife and children?” Sucipto said to express his concern.

EFFORTS TO PROTECT our FARMERS

“If something happens to me, what will happen to my wife and children?” Sucipto said to express his concern.

From 2018, Inagro Jinawi started to lodge its registered coconut sugar farmers to join Indonesia’s National Social Security Agency for Employment (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan).

We recognize that we must consider the safety and welfare of our registered farmers.

Inagro Jinawi has registered 1,509 out of 1,807 registered farmers, per October 2022, to Indonesia’s National Social Security Agency for Employment.  This number will continue to increase shortly. The setting down process is carried out collectively by Inagro Jinawi.

Moreover, the monthly payment of Indonesia’s National Social Security Agency for Employment is 100% covered by Inagro Jinawi. Indeed, relieved our registered farmers.

Sucipto is now is a registered farmer of Inagro Jinawi at Indonesia’s National Social Security Agency for Employment. Sucipto can now start collecting coconut nectar without any worries. Because he realized that if anything happened to him in the course of his employment, there was protection from The National Social Security Agency for Employment.
